Full time term Itinerant School Counsellor position. Duties to commence September 15, 2025 to June 26, 2026.

Based out of the Labrador Regional Office while servicing multiple schools both in-person and virtually. As the Itinerant School Counsellor you will responsible for the development of an annual comprehensive school guidance program which outlines the implementation of interventions that promote the holistic development of students.

Reporting to the designate, you will provide leadership to school and office staff, service to students, implement assessments, and participate in response planning for possible critical incidents/traumatic events. You will further the aims and objectives of NLSchools and support improved educational opportunities through program support.

As a School Counsellor, your work will be guided by the application of the Standards of Practice for School Counsellors which are: comprehensive school guidance program; education system and ethical responsibilities; student development, diversity; comprehensive assessment; counseling and career development; and crisis intervention.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of proactive measures in creating a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment
  • Demonstrated experiences in individual and group counseling and in utilizing data and resources to support student and school community needs
  • Extensive understanding of the assessment process and its implications for student learning and adherence to the comprehensive assessment guidelines established by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development
  • Understanding of and the ability to implement comprehensive assessments which may include formal assessment of achievement and cognitive ability (Level A, B, and C Assessments)
  • Knowledge of information contained in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) pertinent to students served
  • Extensive understanding of the diversity of human growth, development, behavior, learning, and the promotion of the holistic development of students, and demonstrated knowledge of child development and knowledge of the diverse learning needs of students
  • A thorough understanding of the ethical requirements in providing a comprehensive school guidance program
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with stakeholder groups that support the comprehensive school guidance program
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills in collaboration with students and parents/ guardians in decision making
  • Success in fostering partnerships, conflict mediation and resolution, facilitation, collaboration and consultation
  • Strong team-building, time management, analytical and problem solving skills
  • understanding Understanding of the process of career development for students from K-12 Strong of legislation related to child protection, children, and youth
  • Understanding of the education system and supports the learning and development of students
  • Commitment to ongoing professional learning to inform personal practice

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Education
  • Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology, including courses in psychological assessments
  • Candidate must be able to complete Level C Assessments
  • This position may require the use of a personal vehicle and require travel

SALARY AND INCENTIVES: 

  • Annual Teacher Salary Scale contained within the NLTA Provincial Collective Agreement and benefits contained within the agreement.
  • Please note, the following incentives are PRO-RATED if a teacher works less than a full contract or on periods of unpaid leave.
  • A taxable $2040.00 annual Isolation Allowance paid to all Labrador teachers on a b-weekly basis. Please refer to Article 24.02 of the Collective Agreement.
  • A taxable Labrador and Travel Allowancee calculated based on school location and dependants. The bonus is prorated if a teacher works less than a full school year or if not full time.  Please follow the link for details or refer to Collective Agreement. 
  • For those that need to relocate to Labrador, a One Time Only Round Trip Travel Claim in and out of the school community to your home location during the first year, to a maximum of $1700.00. One travel claim is paid upon arrival to the community through the travel claim system and the other paid at the end of the school year when you arrive home.
