Grade 6 students received and participated in an ArtsSmarts project with artist Winnie Glavine where students learned the traditions and evolution of rug hooking in Newfoundland and Labrador. Together, they designed their own project, focusing on a symbol of our province and learned the process involved in the art of rug hooking. In addition to learning the how, students developed skills in concentration, patience, and perseverance. Additionally, they experienced the calming effect of rug hooking. Their finished piece was a certainly a personal reward; an expression of their creativity and a tangible expression of pride in their completed project. It was evident that the students learned a lot about rug hooking and the role it played in our culture. It highlighted that some students have a natural flair for this particular art, discovering a new activity to engage in in their spare time. Many students were hooked before the end of the project!
